Horombo Huts – Kibo Huts

your journey will lead you through a captivating array of landscapes, each more strikingly picturesque than the last. Starting from the heath, you will gradually transition into the arid, barren highlands nestled between Mawenzi and Kibo. The terrain here is strewn with both large and small volcanic rocks, a testament to the volcanic activity that shaped this region in years gone by. The final leg of the trek to the Kibo Huts is particularly demanding, with a steep ascent that will test your physical endurance.

Upon reaching the Kibo Huts, it’s time to prepare your equipment and warm clothing for the challenging ascent to the peak tomorrow. To ensure your water doesn’t freeze, carry it in a thermos. Rest early, as the trek ahead demands all the energy a full night’s sleep can provide. You are on the brink of taking on Kilimanjaro’s ultimate challenge!

Kibo Huts to Summit then Back to Horombo Huts

As the morning breaks, the excitement mounts with an early start between midnight and 2 a.m., marking the commencement of the most mentally and physically demanding part of the trek. Progressing towards the summit, we navigate in a switchback formation, focusing on maintaining warmth and anticipating the incredible sense of achievement that awaits. Ascending through challenging terrain of heavy scree and possibly snow, we make our way towards Gillman’s Point on the crater rim. Here, a brief rest offers a chance to witness the breathtaking sunrise, while faster hikers may even reach the summit in time for this spectacular event. The final hour’s ascent to Uhuru Peak, the highest point on Mount Kilimanjaro and the entire continent of Africa, is characterized by snowy terrain.

Congratulations are in order as you step onto Uhuru Peak, basking in the glory of your remarkable accomplishment. After capturing photos, celebrating, and perhaps shedding a few tears of joy, take a moment to savor this incredible achievement. The descent begins with a steep descent to Mweka Camp, stopping briefly at Barafu for lunch and a much-needed break. Gaiters and trekking poles are strongly recommended for the challenging terrain of loose gravel and volcanic ash. Upon reaching Mweka Camp, you can relish in a well-deserved rest, marking the end of your exhilarating journey on the mountain.

Horombo Huts to Mweka gate then Arusha/Moshi Town

After breakfast and a heartfelt ceremony of appreciation and team bonding with your crew, it’s time to bid farewell. The descent begins, with a stop at the Mandara Huts for lunch. This is also the point where you’ll say goodbye to your guides, cooks, and porters, so remember to tip them for their hard work and dedication. Upon reaching the Marangu Park Gate, you’ll receive your summit certificates as a memento of your achievement.

The weather is noticeably warmer as you descend, and the terrain becomes wet, muddy, and steep, making gaiters and trekking poles highly recommended. A vehicle will be waiting at the gate to drive you back to your hotel in Moshi, approximately 45 minutes away. Here, you can enjoy a long-awaited hot shower, followed by a well-deserved dinner and celebrations to commemorate your Kilimanjaro adventure.
